Research during the past three years has demonstrated that certain food supplements could be helpful for controlling diabetes. There are some indications that a substance called emodin, from the juice of the Aloe vera plant and from a herb called Rheumofficianle, or Chinese Rhubarb, has anti-inflammatory properties. Those anti-inflammatory properties might be helpful for controlling Type 2 diabetes.

Alpha lipoic acid has also shown some promise, helping cells to utilize sugar for energy. When cells take in sugar and use it for energy, blood sugar levels become lower.

About Aloe vera: Aloe vera gel taken directly from the plant's leaves contains a substance called aloin which was banned for use as an over the counter laxative by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. Commercially prepared aloe juice contains almost no aloin. While some sources recommend removing the gel directly from the leaves and either blending it with vitamin C or boiling it and consuming the resulting liquid, they do not address the problem of aloin.

Recipes using this herb: Aloe vera juice is said to have an unattractive flavor, but it can be disguised with more pleasant fruit juices. Iloveindia.com recommends a recipe for juice made with one cucumber, one apple and the juice from a lemon blended with two tablespoons of Aloe vera juice. Another recipe at the same site calls for two carrots, two green apples, one peeled orange and one tablespoon of Aloe vera juice, blended into a fruit punch. Earthportals.com offers a recipe for a juice drink with carrots, beet, turnip, parsnip, celery stalks, rutabaga, red cabbage, radishes, apple, cranberries, Aloe vera juice concentrate and other supplements.

Rheumofficianle also known as Chinese rhubarb root: This herb is used as a laxative, so don't over do it, but a brown powdered extract is available commercially. It goes by the Chinese name da huang.

Ask your doctor whether taking these products fit in with your dietary and medication regimen.

About Alpha lipoic acid: Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant found in yeast, spinach, broccoli and potatoes. Lipoic acid is also available in supplement form. It is thought to prevent cell damage and to protect vitamins E and C. In Germany it is used to treat diabetic neuropathy, a complication of diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2. It is brilliant at reducing nerve pain so it can help people with painful neuropathies. In mild cases, it may be all you need to stop the pain.

Commercial preparations of yeast are available as a powder, or why not try spinach, broccoli and potato soup from food.com. It also calls for olive oil, leeks, garlic, pepper and vegetable stock. Or try suite101.com's recipe for stuffing potato skins with spinach, broccoli and Romano and ricotta cheeses for a healthy, hearty dinner.
