Health Food Supplements - Consumer Guide

Health food supplements are one of the hottest selling products in the market these days. Their total consumption values billions of dollars in the U.S. alone. Recent surveys show that more than half of the adults in the U.S. consume health food supplements in different forms, such as tablets, capsules, powders, soft gels, gel caps and liquids.

The increased consumption of health food supplements can be attributed to public awareness of health issues and improved standard of living in our society. Many studies have shown that there is a close correlation between health and nutrition. Insufficient supply of nutrients can weaken our body defense mechanism, causing medical problems from common ailments to more severe illnesses in the long term.

There are different types of health food supplements, including macronutrients (amino acids, proteins, essential fatty acids), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), enzymes (digestive enzymes and antioxidant enzymes), probiotics (beneficial bacteria in the gut), and herbal supplements. These supplements have unique functions in our body. They are either essential for life and good health, modulate our immune system or help with liver detoxification, digestion, mental clarity, etc.

Many people argue that there is no need to consume health food supplements as long as you have a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet. While this may be true, the fact is maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper diet is difficult to achieve by many people.

Over the past few decades, the green revolution has changed the farming practices over the world. We use more chemical fertilizers, more pesticides to grow the food produce in order to increase harvest and shorten the growth period. As a result, soil nutrients and the population of beneficial soil bacteria are depleted rapidly, and the produce we grow today contain less micronutrient than before.

A stressful lifestyle, improper eating habits, imbalanced diet and increased exposure to chemicals such as environmental pollutants (air, water) and pesticides, drugs, hormones, heavy metals in foods also weaken our body gradually.

Although health food supplements can be beneficial to our health, consumers should still choose the products carefully. Currently, there is little regulation on the quality of health food supplements. Composition of some health food products may not match the label claims and the quality of raw materials and finished products is not guaranteed. Therefore, consumers should only buy from reputable health food manufacturers, read the labels carefully and read more related literatures.

Here are some general rules for buying health food supplements:

1) Supplements made from whole foods, natural sources are better than the synthetic ones. They are more bioactive, can be absorbed readily, and less likely to be contaminated by chemicals such as coal tars used in chemical synthesis.

2) Protein-bonded vitamins and minerals (vitamins and minerals in organic form, binding to amino acids) are more bioactive than the inorganic forms.

3) Buy supplements using safe extraction methods, such as cold pressed extraction or supercritical extraction. This can avoid the harmful residue from chemical extraction.

4) Herbal concentrate and extract are usually more effective than the raw herbs.

5) Organically grown or wild crafted herbs are less likely to be contaminated by heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals.

6) Read the labels, do not consume more than the recommended dose.

7) Be careful when consuming certain herbal supplements, such as Ma Huang / ephedra, Kava Kava, comfrey, etc. Some studies have shown that these herbs may cause severe side effects to some people. Stop use if unusual signs appear after consumption.

8) Some health food supplements may interact with drugs, either by decreasing or increasing their effects. Consult your doctor if you are currently taking medications.

9) Pregnant and nursing women, people with specific medical conditions such consult the doctors when consuming health food supplements.

10) If in doubt, contact the supplement manufacturers or distributors for more information of their products.

11) Health food supplements are available in many places, such as grocery stores, health food stores, drug stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, department stores, online stores, etc. Be a smart consumer, compare the price and service before purchase.

A Natural Dog Food Supplement - Essential Fatty Acids - More to Them Than a Shiny Coat

Adding flax seed to your dog's food bowl is a popular way of helping your dog's coat feel luxurious. But a proper balance of essential fatty acids plays a role more vital in the long term good health of your dog than making his coat shine. There are two types of polyunsaturated oils that dogs are unable to make on their own so they must be consumed. These two types are omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. Any lack of or imbalance between these two oils in the body will result in ill health or disease. Modern commercial pet diets tend to have an excess of omega 6. This can be seen in the huge range of skin problems, dandruff, and excessive shedding so common in dogs.

Adding flax seed oil, a source of omega 3, can help to bring the dog back into balance in some cases, but not all. That is because there are both active and inactive forms of essential fatty acids. The active form can be assimilated immediately into your dog's body and put to work. The inactive form, such as is found in flax seed, however, requires an enzyme to break it down first before it can be properly absorbed and used by the body. Not all dogs have this essential enzyme. Older dogs, exposed for years to a diet of processed food, often have lost this enzyme and therefore cannot absorb inactive forms of omega 3 or omega 6 oils. These unabsorbed oils can build up over time and cause health problems. Dogs that are already struggling with their health will be unable to metabolize inactive fatty acids. Young dogs, on the other hand, do tend to have this enzyme in their system and can do well with either active or inactive essential fatty acids.

If you have an older dog suffering with conditions such as itchy skin, inflammatory bowel, or arthritis, then choose from among active sources. Active Omega 3 sources include cod liver oil and whole fish oil such as salmon. Active Omega 6 sources include evening primrose oil and black currant oil. Inactive sources of Omega 3, to be avoided if your dog is older, unhealthy, or lost the enzyme through heredity, include flax seed oil and hemp seed oil. Inactive Omega 6 sources include common vegetable oils such as those made from corn, sunflower, and safflower. All oils should be fresh, refrigerated and consumed within 6 weeks of opening.

The lack of omega 3, or excessive omega 6 levels, has been linked to a wide range of health problems in people and animals. In addition to a multitude of skin problems, health issues include arthritis, heart and lung disease, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. You may want to consider adding some extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil to your dog's diet. Olive oil, while itself not a source of essential fatty acids, is rich in vitamin E, and will help balance the omega 3 and omega 6 oils in your dog's system.

5 Healthy Brain Food Supplements

Did you know that there are actually a lot of foods out there that can classified as 'brain food' or 'healthy food?' If you didn't, then some of these foods here on the list might be surprising to you if you are seeing them for the first time:

1. Salmon that is caught from the wild

Salmon contains a lot of omega 3 fatty acids that aids in the blood flowing to the brain and also allows your brain to function at its maximum capacity. The thing here to note is that it is important to only consume salmon from the wild, and not those salmon that are raised in farms or processed unnaturally.

2. Coffee Beans

Although too much caffeine is not good, coffee beans are still considered to be healthy foods if you consume them moderately. Coffee contains all sorts of nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins and certain minerals that are essential to brain function. Caffeine content in coffee has also been proven to reduce the chance of contracting Alzheimer's and dementia.

3. Cacao Beans

Although the name cacao may seem weird and funny to you at first, it is actually something we are all familiar with. Yes, cacao beans are the beans that chocolates are made from. Cacao beans are good for promoting brain functions as they are rich in amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Beware though, only dark chocolates are made from cacao beans, not milk or while chocolates.

4. Avocado

Again, avocados are a great source of omega 3 acids. I guess I don't need to repeat myself on how great omega acids are when it comes to allowing your brain to perform. Avocados can also serve as a great replacement for cheese and dairy products as it provides you with a natural source of fat. Consuming fats in moderation is still necessarily to maintain a healthy living, and avocados can help you to do so without you worrying about getting plump.

5. Books

Books...? Although books aren't necessarily food, I feel that it would be good to include them here as we always have to make sure that we are always feeding our brains with something that our brain can 'chew' on, or else it won't matter whatever food we consume in the world if they don't stimulate productive thoughts. Look for books that are inspirational and will help you to find out and learn more about the things that you want to achieve in your life.

Ingrain Your Food Supplement With the Richest Vitamin C Source

Like a small town being bombarded from different directions, our cells undergo a similar siege by free radicals. These substances can cause quick cellular aging and DNA denaturing leading to dangerous fatal cancers. Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants. The richest source of Vitamin C is a fruit; not every fruit. This article discus the incredible benefits of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid.) in this fruit.

Vitamin C neutralizes a variety of toxins that find their way into the human body. To cure meat, for example, some people use nitrates. This chemical is carcinogenic. It facilitates formation of carcinogenic substances (cancer causing substances.)

The immune system can be strengthened by using Vitamin C. In fact Vitamin C is part of white blood cells. This Vitamin is good for any infection especially viral ones. High levels of Vitamin C in the body increases the amounts of interferon, a powerful protein that reduces the replication rate of viruses.

Vitamin C contributes to the formation of fibrous substance needed for wound healing. It strengthens capillary and arterial walls. Iron can be easily absorbed in the presence of Vitamin C.

When Vitamin C is deficient, fatigue, poor wound healing, and scurvy could be experienced.

Which fruit is the richest source of Vitamin C?

It is a red fruit called acerola. Among all known sources of Vitamin C recorded in nutritional archives, acerola is the richest source. A 100g of this fruit gives 1678mg of Vitamin C. The next best source is red pepper whose 100g gives 190mg. Note the difference!

Apart from Vitamin C, acerola provides us with organic acids and flavonoids necessary for good health.

Vitamin C is required in big amounts by those suffering from infectious diseases, pregnant and lactating mothers, patients undergoing surgical operations, smokers and those who do extreme physical work.

Some nutritional supplement manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers find it difficult to come up with a supplement that is ingrained with a good source of Vitamin C. Get the richest source of Vitamin C --- acerola; it will surely satisfy your clients.

Vitamin C - The Most Common Health Food Supplement

Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid was first isolated from lemons in 1932. The C in this very important vitamin is debatable and may stand for citrus, cold, or collagen for the following reasons.

Fruits found with the highest concentration of Vitamin C are citrus fruits, rose hips, cherries, papayas, cantaloupes, and strawberries. Common vegetable sources are red and green peppers, broccoli, sprouts, tomatoes, asparagus, parsley, dark leafy greens, and cabbage.

The most important function of Vitamin C is the formation and maintenance of collagen, the basis of connective tissue, found in skin, ligaments, cartilage, vertebral discs, joint linings, capillary walls, bones, and teeth.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin. It blocks the oxidation of water-soluble molecules, which lead to the creation of free radicals, the culprits responsible for making our bodies prone to cellular injury and disease.

A most popular disease associated with Vitamin C deficiency is scurvy. Lack of Vitamin C in the body impedes collagen formation, causing reduced health of the tissues. Early symptoms are poor resistance to infection and very slow wound healing. In addition, many medical problems have been found to be associated with low blood levels of Vitamin C. These are common infections, colds, depression, high blood pressure, arthritis, vascular fragility, allergies, ulcers, and even cholesterol gallstones.

The RDA for adults is 60 mg. Only 10 to 20-mg. of Vitamin C are required to prevent scurvy, and there is more than that in one portion of most fruits or vegetables. For most people the minimum dosage is between 100-150 mg. daily.

Vitamin C is the most commonly consumed nutrient supplement and is available as regular or chewable tablet or as time-release capsule, as well as in powder, effervescent, and liquid forms.

Treating Dyspraxia With Medication and Food Supplements

Dyspraxia has been one of the latest additions in the long list of diseases people generally suffer from. But there is one thing though that makes this disease far worse than most of the existing ones. First, Dyspraxia is mostly found in men and second, teenagers and small children are the most susceptible to this disease. Most parents have therefore become desperate to learn more about the disease and ways of protecting their children from their reach.

But first to know about preventive measures you have to know about the disease itself. Dyspraxia or which is sometimes known as developmental Dyspraxia in kids is acquired at the time of birth and can last through the entire lifespan of your kid. The negative side of this disease is that it leads to impaired sensory and motor skills which cannot be cured overnight.

Doctors have come up with a number of medical treatments that assures reduce the problems associated with an ailment like Dyspraxia. Some parents also try out various body therapies to ensure their children are liberated from this frustrating disease. But at times just these are not enough for treating a person suffering from neurological disorders like Dyspraxia. Ideally you need to introduce a new diet chart to your child's life if you want him freed from the clutches of such diseases. Green vegetables, brown bread, milk are some of the best food items one could suggest to dyspraxic patients.

Food rich in fatty acids can also be a good replacement to these edible items. If your son refuses to accept the diet plan, than you can go for supplementary medicines that can provide relief and rescue from the hands of Dysprxia. But you should consult a local physical first before using any of these supplements.

Pycnogenol and Other Food Supplements Builds Health - A Review

My last article discussed high blood pressure as a direct result of digesting protein foods and not having enough vitamin D, folic acid, B 6 and B 12 vitamins to break homocysteine down so it can be purged from your body. Protein foods are important parts of a healthy diet so cannot, or should not be removed. Please adjust your diet, however, to exclude all soda drinks, chips, crackers, etc to give your body a better chance to provide you a safer body in which to live.

Your body has many more enemies than homocysteine and needs all the help it can get. You are continually being attacked by free radicals. They are in the air you breath and the foods you eat. Your own body processes produces some free radicals and all of them must be quickly removed or you will suffer health problems as a result.

Science has shown us that a steady intake of quality natural vitamins and organic minerals are essential to good health. You cannot get an adequate supply of them from your food sources, even if you are conscientiously eating the purported healthy food pyramid. If a nutrient isn't in the food you eat, you can't absorb it from the food. If the plant you eat was grown in soul missing the nutrient, even though it is supposed to be in the plant, it won't be there.

The same is true for the meats you eat. If the nutrient isn't in the plants the animal eats, it can't absorb the nutrient which you need. And we have known since 1936 that our soils are deficient in trace minerals needed for health. You can check the government's research papers to check me out. The incriminating report was produced in that year.

Even though a lot of people want you to think synthetic vitamins are the same as organic vitamins, they are misinformed. If you look at a natural vitamin through a microscope and then look at a synthetic vitamin, you will be able to see a difference - and your body knows the difference. As a matter of fact, your liver which has to process all the junk you put in your body along with the good stuff, can be damaged by synthetic anything, including vitamins.

In addition to the natural vitamins you need daily, you also need additional antioxidants to destroy the free radicals you experience daily. Again, you don't get enough to them through natural processes, so must supplement your diet. If you are young and really healthy, something like grape seed extract could be sufficient. But if you really want the strongest antioxidant possible to make sure all your antioxidant needs are being met, you need to use a true pycnogenol product. None of the other antioxidant products on the market is its equivalent.

You are the one living in your body and your health should be your most precious possession. If so, you must read my book. It goes into detail on the causes and prevention of many diseases and how you are being misled by the media and other information sources. It comes with a 60 day satisfaction guarantee as well as bonuses. In addition most of the money earned will be used to develop even more powerful health building products which you will want to have in your possession. You can learn more about me, why I have become so knowledgeable in this area and why you need to own the book at http://www.modernnutritionbreakthrough.com

Green Juice - The Miracle Food Supplement

There were many innovative devices that came out of the World War II. Advances in medicine, electronics, radar, aircraft, and nuclear energy made it to the top of the list of those things that benefit mankind. Most of these innovations came from the nations who were victorious, however, there is one innovative food that came from Japan as a result of the war. Green juice, or Aojiru as it is known by its Japanese name, is the result of a military physician to provide better food for his family during those war years.

Kale, a type of cabbage that remains in a leafy state without forming a head, is the main ingredient for green juice. The Japanese today manufacture the juice from kale, or the leaves of the komatsuna plant that is similar to the turnip. During the 1980s green juice was marketed as a powdered dietary supplement throughout Japan and a recent survey revealed that the green juice business amassed over $500 million in 2005.

There are as many recipes as there are people who make the drink in their kitchens. Here is a common recipe that most anyone can make up without much preparation. Place the following in your juicer:

    * 1/2 fresh pear
    * 1/2 apple
    * 1/2 cup of spinach
    * 1/2 cup of parsley, leaves and stems
    * 1 stalk of celery plus leaves
    * 1/2 cucumber
    * A small piece of ginger
    * A small section of papaya

Run you juicer for the length of time needed to thoroughly extract all possible liquid from these ingredients. The yield should be approximately sixteen fluid ounces. The general advice on preparing your own green juice recipe is to begin juicing those vegetables that you already enjoy eating in a non-juiced state. Most everyone uses kale, celery, fennel, and cucumbers as the base for their recipe. Add to the base most any kind of lettuce along with endive, spinach, and escarole, which is a green leafy vegetable and is a form of endive.

The more advanced you become at preparing it you may want to add various types of cabbage, parsley, collard greens, dandelion greens, and mustard greens. These last items are quite bitter when taken by themselves, but in combination with fruits like cranberries, lemons, pear and apple are tolerable. Green juice is an excellent way to start your day, and to add nutrients that are omitted from many diets across the land. Improve your health with a glass a day.

Food Supplements to Give Your Dog a Healthy Coat

If you feed your dog the best food available, then most likely you won't need to give him any nutritional supplements to produce a healthy, shiny coat. However, this sort of diet can be time-consuming to prepare, not to mention expensive.

If your dog's coat isn't looking as good as it perhaps should, then his diet may be lacking in one or more essential nutrients. Thankfully, there's an excellent range of supplements to help top up your dog's nutrition, resulting in better all-round health and a coat to match:

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

These typically come from oily fish and seeds. Getting sufficient omega-3 has been shown to produce a healthy-looking coat. But don't overdo them - these fats should not make up more than about 5% of your dog's intake of fat.

2. Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Similar to omega-3, these are found in meat and vegetable fats. Again, they can enhance the shine of your dog's coat, but be careful not to overdo them. An easy way to add this to your dog's diet is to give him a tablespoon of vegetable oil every day.

3. Egg

A daily portion of egg will help boost the health of your dog's fur. Some people recommend feeding him raw egg, but this carries a slight risk of salmonella, so it's preferable to use cooked egg, as long as your dog doesn't have an allergy to it.

4. Linatone, Missing Link, Mirra-coat etc

These supplements offer an excellent blend of fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Many dog owners swear by them, and report that they produce a really healthy looking coat, and a happier, healthier dog.

Whichever way you choose to add them to your dog's diet, supplements can help to provide any nutrients and vitamins that would otherwise be missing. This provides a welcome boost to your dog's health, creating a visible difference to his coat.

What You Should Know About Food Supplements

Ten years ago most dietary supplements were based on deficiencies that were known to exist in the diets of many people. This meant that vitamin B and C and minerals such iron and calcium, were readily available, but anything else was unheard of.

However, nutritional science has changed all that and now we know that many diets are lacking in several essential nutrients. We have also expanded our knowledge into areas such as phytochemicals found in fruit and vegetables as well as becoming more aware of the important role herbal preparations have to play in our health. In fact, doctors who have been sceptical of the benefits of supplements for a long time are beginning to accept that there is a role for them alongside conventional medicine - and many of them take supplements themselves!

Because of our increasing awareness of complementary medicines, manufacturers have responded and we are faced with an ever-growing range of supplements obtainable everywhere - supermarkets, corner shops, health stores, internet and even market stalls - and at prices that range from as little as £1 up to any price you'd care to think of.

So why pay, say, £8.50 for a bottle of vitamin C from one shop when you can get one for £1 on the market?

The adage "you get what you pay for" applies to this sector of the market more so, probably, than to any other. Companies who have ongoing programs of development, perform clinical trials and have education programs for their staff, distributors and, in many cases, end customers, have to reflect this in the price charged for their product. Additionally, there's the question of quality and strength. For example, to take the vitamin C prices above, you'll probably find the £8.50 bottle will contain 1000mg tablets with additional magnesium, zinc and bioflavinoids and will be timed release (meaning you get a constant supply through-out the day). The cheap £1 bottle will probably contain 100mg tablets with nothing added except bulking agents. Just doing the maths will show you where the real economy is.

As with everything, education is the key - you not only need to know what you want, but why you want it, how much you need to take and in what form it will give the best result for you.

The real lesson to be learnt from this is to always read and understand the label - and I'll show you how in my next article.

Bee Propolis - The Unknown Food Supplement Health Fanatics Love

Bee Propolis Research

Bee propolis is a strange substance which, at first, one might be a little leery of using to supplement a diet. Bees create propolis by combining sap from trees, flower buds, and other botanical sources with their saliva and natural beeswax. Along with beeswax, propolis comprises the structure of beehives. With antifungicidal and antimicrobial properties, propolis is used by bees to prevent diseases and parasites from attacking the hive. This may seem like a strange substance, but studies have shown that it imparts the same qualities within the human body as it does for the beehive.

In effect, propolis was the first antibiotic ever discovered. It has been used by for over two thousand years by civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans to help keep wounds, lesions, and burns from getting infected. Ever since then, peoples all over Europe have used propolis to treat a number of conditions, including acne, arthritis, and all manner of infection. Current medical research has supported those ancient practices and taken then a step further, testing its effect as a treatment for common bacteria.

Staphylococcus aureus causes many surgical infections, pneumonia, and blood poisoning. It is incredibly dangerous, because five to ten percent of all hospitalized patients in the U.S. develop these staph infections. Multiple medical journals have documented the activity of propolis as a growth inhibitor for S. aureus. Specifically, certain extracts in propolis - isoferulic, sinapic, and caffeic acids - have been shown to stop staph infections from becoming serious.

Another study showed that propolis, combined with traditional antibiotics, had a "marked synergistic effect" on their anti-staph activity. Other studies have shown that propolis inhibits various species of staph bacteria causing tooth decay and strep throat. Fascinatingly, keeping a piece of propolis under the tongue is an old-time beekeepers' remedy for sore throat. Recent medical journal reports have shown that propolis has significant antiviral capabilities as well, making it effective in helping to treat upper respiratory infections such as influenza and the common cold.

As a potential anti-cancer agent, the caffeic acids in propolis have been shown to prevent precancerous tissue from forming in the colon. More research needs to be done to prove this conclusively, but with the overall health benefits already shown by propolis, one would not be surprised.

Finally, propolis is a noted antioxidant, useful for fighting free radicals within the body. Its flavonoids and ethanols have been shown to function similarly to Vitamin E, and help to keep free radicals from causing damage to the cellular organs that deal with the transformation of fats into energy.

As a supplement, propolis is better used in a preventative capacity, rather than as treatment. If you have an allergy to bee stings or honey, you should avoid taking propolis. Likewise, if you have a history of reactions to pine resins, you should consult with a doctor or health professional before including propolis in your supplemental regimen. Despite all that, the health benefits of propolis have been proven time and again, for thousands of years. Whether you use it in tablet, capsule, or lotion form, its proven antifungal, antibiotic, and antioxidant qualities can help you maintain a healthy immune system.

Making Effective Hoodia Health Food Supplements

Hoodia is a succulent plant from the Kalahari Desert; it is currently taking the diet industry by storm with its appetite suppressant abilities. It has captivated the minds of diet manufacturers who are all keen to leverage its properties.

How do you make an effective Hoodia supplement?

Firstly you need the finest Hoodia Gordonii plants. Phytopharm owns the patent to the P57 extract from Hoodia and as such, they have bought up much of the Hoodia Gordonii and are growing it in massive government run farms in the Kalahari Desert.

Hoodia Gordonii is also a protected plant, which means unless you are government issued you cannot export it. The Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) rarely issues permits.

Secondly the centre of the Hoodia Gordonii plant should be used. The San People of the Kalahari do not eat the skin or the spines of the Hoodia plant. Extracting the pure herbal extract is a really difficult process. It takes about two thousand pounds of Hoodia Gordonii plants to make one hundred pounds of powder. It is expensive, but produces an extremely effective supplement.

Thirdly, there are ethical business practices to consider. The Western drug companies are keen to squeeze every penny of profit out of everything they produce. Sadly, this is at the expense of the indigenous tribes and their rights. As the just way to legally get Hoodia Gordonii from the Kalahari Desert is by the government run farms, it's very easy for the government to track which companies must pay royalties, if the company supplying your Hoodia supplement is not paying any sort royalties to the San People, they are not using genuine Hoodia Gordonii.

You also need to ensure quality control is in place. Many companies may be tempted to dilute the pure extract with a filler in order to conserve the pure extract and maximise their profits. The best way to ensure the extract works and does what it says it on the cover is to test it yourself. Use the supplement and notice the difference, if it is not working then stop using it.

Due to costs there is little chance of finding it in pill form at the moment. However, liquid extracts are accessible and you can buy them from a number of known suppliers online. The nice thing about liquid extract is that it is absorbed by the body quicker, it is more natural, and can be mixed with juice to make it taste better.

If your keen on utilising this revolutionary diet product and would like to know where to buy hoodia, then I suggest you check out: Where To Buy Hoodia or http://www.wheretobuyhoodia.info/

There are quite a lot of benefits when purchasing products online these days, as opposed to purchasing at your local health food store. One of the immediate advantages is operating from the comfort of ones own home, the time factor, travel expense, and the privacy of your transaction, including other benefits such as:

• Available information in helping to make a well informed decision.
• Saving money.
• Variety

1. When purchasing health food products at any time one should consult their doctor first especially if on prescription.

2. It is important first of all to know exactly what you are looking for. Then Google Search the exact product, check the price or prices including the post and packaging involved, research the information supplied and know that it has the exact ingredients required. You can check out the particular site by Google Search: Review the particular website name on Google Search for feed back.

3. While you never purchase merit of the price, quality always comes first. That is why when purchasing online it can be cheaper even on quality products. Comparing an online store to your local health food store, the online store does not have staff costs, and does not have the same rent and rates as a high street store. There is also plenty of competition online. This all helps to lower prices.

4. With such a vast amount of shops to select your purchases from, this also provides a person with the large variety of health food to select from. If you shop in a local store and fail to find a product you have the added expense of travelling to another store and time wasting

Is The Food Supplement Alfalfa Safe?

The health benefits of alfalfa are largely unsupported scientifically, although there is plenty of anecdotal enthusiasm for it. Alfalfa is highly nutritious, containing approximately 16% protein, and 8% of minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. It also contains small amounts of the vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Alfalfa is believed to support the immune system, help in normalizing blood clotting, assist with the absorption of nutrients, alleviate hot flushes, cleanse the blood, and promote heart health.

New research also found that alfalfa sprouts and other sprouted vegetables (like broccoli and clover sprouts), may help protect new cells from DNA damage. In the trial conducted on human cells in vitro, researchers at the University of Ulster's School of Biomedical Sciences found that whilst sprouts didn't improve the health of already damaged DNA, it did protect cells from new damage. DNA damage is a biochemical indicator of cancer.

However, there are a few things to consider before adding a lot of sprouts to your diet, or supplementing with alfalfa.

Sprouts can harbor bacteria that leads to food poisoning. This is particularly of issue for children, the elderly, and people with immune related illnesses, like Aids. The problem can be eliminated if sprouts are cooked, but then you don't get the benefit of all the enzymes in them, and some vitamins may be lost. There was an outbreak of salmonella in 2002 in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, and the FDA recommends that sprouts be cooked first.

And in 1995, alfalfa sprouts were associated with an outbreak of salmonella in Chicago. 17 people experienced symptoms ranging from diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and headaches, and 4 people had to be hospitalized. Many organic growers, however, feel their seeds are safe, and the risk is exaggerated. Washing sprouts well can minimize the risk of bacterial poisoning like salmonella. Thorough washing also removes mold, another possible problem.

One potential issue intrinsic to alfalfa is that it has been associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in animal studies (as opposed to human trials or cases). Alfalfa supplements have been associated with the activation of dormant SLE as well. SLE is an autoimmune disease, which can damage the kidneys and other organs.

Alfalfa can also interfere with the way the body uses vitamin E, and has been linked to abnormalities in the blood. These possible issues make taking alfalfa supplements long term a bit risky.

The FDA And It's Relationship to The Food Supplement Industry

There is a lot of buzz these days about supplementing your diet with everything from vitamins, to herbs that are specifically thought to increase certain attributes of your person. Are any of these legitimate? Hi, I'm Steve Beaman and welcome to the Physical Path.

I received an email from a friend recently that introduced me to the latest money making venture, a multi-level vitamin marketing concept with Donald Trump behind it! What, now the Donald himself is getting into vitamin supplements? The reality is, he's not stupid. This industry now exceeds $25,000,000 in annual sales it's is not expected to slow its rapid growth. The reason of course is that Americans flock to the quick fix. Want to lose weight, don't exercise and control your diet, take a pill. Not feeling energetic enough, take an energy shot. On the run through airports and trying to get class, have a protein bar.

The reality is as America has increased in its general portability, so has the need to create portable foods and that is where a large part of the supplement industry falls. Very few doctors would disagree for example with the notion that taking a multi-vitamin for a 50 year old is a good thing. Centrum has all sorts of research to support the notion that supplementing calcium, iron, and vitamins is, in fact a good thing.

Now with that said, buyers need to be careful because you should know that the FDA does not regulate this area of the food industry. There is no federal oversight of the "safety" of these products except that companies are required to maintain and file reports regularly highlighting any health problems or indications of health problems. Most of the supplement industry is based on natural product that is generally accepted as safe, although from time to time, you do get something like ephedrine, which was used for weight loss that is found ex-post-facto to be dangerous.

As with most things, a little common sense here goes a long way. Is taking an extra vitamin C supplement a good thing to do in the winter? The answer of course is probably yes.. And I say probably because I'm not a doctor and I'm sure there's a case where someone shouldn't have taken some. But generally, the supplemental vitamins found in the quality multi-vitamins can boost up your body's own defenses and work to provide you a healthier life. But along the same lines, the pills that promise miracle weight loss, or enhancement, have bye and large been found to be frauds. They don't hurt you, but they don't do anything either.

Remember, these supplements cannot be marketed to you as a cure, because by definition, they haven't undergone the massively expensive, and massively time consumer process to be approved for a treatment. The federal legislation on supplements, signed in 1994, basically allows manufactures to use natural substances which have been effectively proven to be safe, in any way they want, as long as they don't add anything "new" to a pre-existing list. Thus the enormous diversity of supplement claims. The FDA's position on these things is largely, no harm, no foul. So you should be very careful when you spend your hard earned money on supplements that might just be doing nothing but making you poorer.

Natural Dog Food Supplements - Easy Does It

Dogs will eat just about anything they can lay their paws, er teeth on. So switching from a commercial brand of dog food to a healthier, raw food diet usually goes smoothly. Sometimes, however, owners are reluctant to believe they are capable of providing a healthy alternative for their canine buddies. They hedge their bets by mixing in commercial food or by adding multiple supplements.

Continuing to feed your dog commercial food along with raw can upset the gastrointestinal tract of some dogs resulting in diarrhea. Chemical additives in the commercial food is never eliminated so the true benefits of a natural diet are never really experienced. The dog is short changed. On the other hand, going raw but insisting on adding a truck load of supplements into your dog's diet such as herbs, oils and vitamins can also backfire. So many foreign ingredients can cause the dog to refuse the new food or, if they do eat it, can also cause gastrointestinal issues.

Using a variety of meaty bone and vegetable sources means your dog's diet will naturally balance over time. The quality of the meats and vegetables you select will be affected by their respective growing conditions. Animals raised in factory farming conditions are not allowed to eat what they have been naturally designed to eat, i.e. grass, but instead are force fed grain. This results in a lack of omega 3 essential fatty acids in their bodies. Crops grown on depleted but chemically fertilized soil have been shown to contain fewer nutrients than those grown in naturally rich soil. Two more reasons to select organic or small farm sources of food for yourself and your dog.

If you are unable to locate good quality food sources you may decide to supplement. But do not supplement indiscriminately. Bones are rich in minerals. Unless the meaty bones you are buying are from a factory farm, adding minerals to a raw, meaty bones diet is likely unnecessary and possibly even dangerous. Excessive calcium, for example, can cause joint problems.

The best approach is to focus on variety. You're going for balance over time and not in every meal. A dog in the wild would not pass up a dinner of fresh rabbit just because he happened to have eaten one for breakfast. He takes advantage of what's available and in season. More eggs from nesting birds in spring, more berries in the summer. You get the idea.

If you really feel your food sources are not as good as they could be consider adding real food items such as eggs, cottage cheese, cod liver oil, kelp and alfalfa to your dog's menu. And continue to look for better, organic if possible, sources. Naturally derived vitamins and nutrients in raw whole foods will always be more satisfying and healthier for you and your dog.

Dog Food Supplement - 5 Tips to Keeping your Canine Healthy

Many dog owners wonder if using a canine supplement is a good idea. If you have a healthy dog or puppy, many experts caution against supplements. However, there can be benefits to supplements, especially if your dog is sick or has a health problem. Read on to learn tips to keeping your canine healthy.

The Power of Antioxidants. Some studies have shown that vitamins C and E can be beneficial to your sick dog and provide some protection against heart disease. These vitamins may also be helpful for a canine that suffers from allergies or is battling cancer.

If you're considering giving your dog an antioxidant supplement, talk with you vet. They can assist you with dosage and make a brand recommendation.

The Benefits of Fish Oil. You may have heard about the health benefits of fish oil in humans, but what about your dog? Fish oil may help prevent canine diabetes, cancer and allergies. Some vets even say it can lower blood pressure and reduce the chance of blood clots.

So how do you give your dog fish oil? Talk to your vet about feeding your dog fish high in fatty acids like salmon and tuna. You can also use a supplement like flaxseed...just add a little to your dog's food.

Reduce Joint Pain. If your dog has arthritis, you may be looking for a way to reduce his joint pain. Studies suggest that Adequan may reduce the pain of canine arthritis. This supplement is an injectable, so you should consult your vet about the appropriate dosage and how to administer.

Beware of Calcium Supplements.
We know that getting enough calcium is critical to humans, but what about dogs? Typically, your dog will get enough calcium from his regular diet. And furthermore, some studies actually show that giving your dog a calcium supplement may be harmful.

Excess calcium in dogs may be linked to disorders like hip dysplasia and wobblers syndrome. So the bottom line is stay away from the calcium supplement unless your vet specifically recommends it for your dog.

Stop the Itch. If your dog has itchy skin, talk with your vet about adding fatty acids to his diet. Some studies show a reduction in canine skin problems from adding this supplement. You can give your dog a pill or add flaxseed oil to his food. Your vet can help with dosage recommendations.

The important thing to remember about canine supplements is that they're serious business. There isn't any government oversight, so you want to be very careful. Never give your dog a supplement unless you run it past your vet first. Make sure to read the label closely so your dog is only getting what the vet recommended. And always watch your dog carefully to notice any responses to the supplement.

Whole Food Supplements Versus Isolated Or Synthetic Supplements

The basic question many people face when choosing a supplement is whether or not to choose a whole food product over one that is comprised of purely isolated or synthetic nutrients. Is it worth paying the extra for a bottle of tablets that contain concentrated whole food rather than simply chemical isolated vitamins and minerals?

The underlying premise of alternative health practitioners and the health food industry is that only by treating the whole person can we support optimal health - hence the term Holistic Health. Those of us who are looking to live a natural and healthy life have recognized that there is an interweaving of elements within life, within nature and within the human body that is indescribably complex. All of these elements need to be functioning harmoniously together in order for the whole to operate smoothly.

When we isolate nutrients from whole food we are immediately taking a step away from life - away from the whole. We are saying for example, that ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is important but the hundreds of other amazing compounds that are naturally found within a Vitamin C rich food, such as an orange, have no significance. This is truly absurd! On Dr Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database you can easily look up the phytochemicals found in an orange. On this wonderful web site you will discover for yourself that there are almost 300 micronutrients in an orange that have been identified to date. In addition, if you look at the activities of these phytochemical compounds, you will see that many of them have extreme health supportive benefits.

Just for a moment consider the possibility that these 300 different compounds work together in some way - just like the different organs of the body work together. Then compare the complexity that this represents to the single fraction which is isolated ascorbic acid. I don't know about you but I have to conclude that if you take out the Vitamin C and discard the orange you have pretty much just kept the bath water and thrown the baby out! When I follow this simple line of reasoning I have to conclude that taking a supplement that delivers nutrients in a concentrated whole food is an exponentially better choice and is certainly worth a fraction more.

Nutritional Food Supplements, Do You Really Need to Take Them?

Nutritional supplement intakes have been in the rise for quite some years now. In today's hectic modern day environment, more and more people are talking and about and taking nutritional supplements every day. To think that it all started out as just as another alternative natural herb remedies.

The supplements of today far outclass the herbal remedies of the old, in terms of sophisticated preparation and production. Today, you get these nutritious supplements in various form factors. They are now available for consumption as pills, capsules, liquid, teas, etc. A handful of them, however, are still home growned and processed.

Why should you take nutritional supplements?

Stress is one reason for taking supplements, although not a directly related one. Today, due to a hectic daily working schedule and routine, a majority of the people in the world is under tremendous stress levels. Stress is certainly not healthy.

Stress lowers your body's resistance to diseases. If you find yourself prone to getting sick, that's a clear sign of stress. One of the simplest way to attend to stress related diseases is by taking in supplements. Almost all nutritional supplements carry the property of enhancing your immune system.

As such, when you're down with a stress related pain, you'd certainly want to revitalize your body's immune system. By taking in Nutritional Supplements, you are directly increasing your immune system. As such you will have a much more potent immune system that can withstand  most attacks.

For the most part, these nutritious supplements are generally taken to ensure that people undergoing weight loss programs maintain the necessary vitamins and minerals required by the body. Those who are on a weight loss program tend to take less food daily, as such, they need these supplements to provide them with sufficient vitamins and minerals.

Supplements also provide a healthy level of energy boost to counter the energy sapping regiment of the weight loss program. This ensures that weight loss participants remain energetic through out the program. Without supplements, they would probably have to face a daily battle with lethargy and have no energy to do pretty much anything at all.

No matter what your reasons are for taking these nutritional supplements, the fact remains that supplements are a necessity in today's daily modern life. Be it for stress, weight loss, or just lifestyle, you would be better of taking supplements every day.

There are many different supplements to chose from. You can basically just go into a pharmacy, retail store, or online store and pick any one that meets your liking. While some may be better than others, in general, they all pretty much offer the same benefit. Thus it's really up to you to make your pick.

Food Supplements or No Food Supplements? That Is the Question

With all the advancements that have been made in the modern world, bio-medical research has managed to assist in the quest for weight loss with many drugs that assist is many ways. Many of these drugs and medicines are packaged as supplements and without exception they all claim to offer to assist to lose weight fast and safe and without too much trouble along the way. The most obvious question we must ask ourselves, though, is are they effective?

I'm sure that we have all heard the negative results that some of the users of some of these supplements have had in the past as the press never fail to grab hold of tales of doom and gloom. Consequently, such supplements are often universally viewed as being merely scams with a huge amount of cynicism. However, never lose hope, as for every tale of woe and despair there are an equal if not greater number of fabulous good news stories. Most individuals who try such supplements report profound weight loss and manage to lose weight fast and safe. Therefore we should conclude that there is more evidence to support the use of such supplements than the nay-sayers would have us believe.

To best appreciate what they do, we should endeavour to understand how and why most supplements work. Generally, the majority of diet supplements carry out one or more of the following functions:

• Assist in controlling the appetite.
• Boost the catabolic side of the metabolic process
• Help the processes of the body's digestive system

Hopefully, you will agree that assisting any one or all of these processes would naturally help any individual to lose weight fast and safe. Firstly, controlling the appetite of an individual is paramount to avoid eating more than is necessary, otherwise known as binge eating. The majority of individuals that are obese or overweight have trouble just saying no to the amount of food that they eat, so controlling the appetite for these people would be of primary importance.

Likewise, those that have or are perceived to have a slow metabolic rate are again at risk of gaining weight or being unable to lose weight fast and safe, so something that could increase the catabolic side of their metabolism would help them in their goal. This means that they will be able to utilise any excess energy derived from food and therefore not add to their body fat stores. Finally, helping the processes of the digestive system by easing the passage of food will in addition aid metabolism. Consequently, you will not be sleeping while your body retains undigested food, and risking storing it as body fat.

In summary, any supplements that do any or all three of these functions cannot fail to have the potential to assist anyone to lose weight fast and safe, but do they work as advertised? One cannot wholly substantiate the advertisers' claims, but what we do know is that most supplements do work if you are realistic in your expectations. The bottom line is that supplements can help as part of a diet regime, but they cannot be used solely in isolation. There is, after all no such thing as a miracle cure.

Martin Deakin is an avid supporter of healthy weight loss. He is passionate about the ill effects of being overweight and how to help others to lose weight fast and safe. You could say that he is almost fanatical. He has a blog which includes articles, research and resources on how to lose weight fast and safe at http://www.loseweight-fastandsafe.com.

Health Food Supplement - 7 Proven Steps to More Energy

But what is energy exactly? At its most basic level it is your capacity to do the work or activity you aspire to each day. It mostly comes from the food you eat. Lack of energy can come from your stress level or lack of sleep apart from eating proper food and a health food vitamin.

When lack of energy symptoms persist, it is always advisable to consult your doctor. Assuming medically all is ok, a multivitamin including mineral supplement may be helpful to boost your energy levels.

Going without food over long spells of time will deplete ones energy levels. To maintain your sugar levels you should eat every couple of hours, eating small and healthy quantities of food.

Important rules for energy are:

• You should never go without a healthy breakfast every morning as it is the most important meal of your day.
• There are so many different recommendations for a healthy breakfast. It really is about finding one you would like. It could be Oatmeal as it is high in fibre content it will also give you energy that will last for hours.
• A pint of water first, then a helping of black grapes, followed by 2 soft boiled eggs and one slice of brown bread. This will give you energy that should last for hours.
• For that 11 am snack that so many of us look forward to, have a handful of peanuts and a portion of fruit i.e. a banana. These will give you the lift you require.
• Rather than having a cup of coffee have a glass of freshly - squeezed orange juice, which is so much better for you than caffeine.
• For lunch make sure to include fish in the meal such as sardines, salmon or mackerel. Fish is great for energy for your heart.
• Beans are a great high energy food, as they include a lot of protein and also help to lower your cholesterol.

Vital Nutrients - A Natural Whole Food Supplement Made From Fruits and Vegetables

By Anthony Antolics

Vital Nutrients is a whole food vitamin supplement made using actual fruits and vegetables to obtain the highest quality of completely natural vitamins and minerals, along with other phytonutrients. Whole food processing is the best method for concentrating nutrients into a nutritional supplement as it is the only way to preserve nutritional value.

Most vitamin and mineral supplements are made with synthetic forms of vitamins, obtained through laboratory processes and while many believe the form and source of the vitamin doesn't matter, the fact is that it does. Synthetic minerals and vitamins are often not absorbable or usable by the body. Vital Nutrients supplement contains naturally occurring minerals and vitamins which exist in their biological state of chelation, making them more absorbable - after all if a nutrient cannot be absorbed in the digestive tract, it cannot be used by the body.

Vital Nutrients contains the safest, most absorbable form of 9 of the supplemental minerals research shows in serious short supply in our diets, yet necessary for optimal health. In the natural state of whole food, minerals are chelated (bound) to amino acids which carry them straight to the gut wall so they can be used by the body. If minerals are not absorbed in this way, they create toxic build-ups. Often, metal toxicity is a response to these minerals. Vital Nutrients includes organic minerals and minerals chelated from the only company to hold over 55 patents on their amino acid chelation process. In order to get a patent, you have to prove it does what you say it does!

Essential vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, along with the entire spectrum of the Vitamin B family can help to treat and prevent many disorders of the human body. In addition, minerals such as calcium and magnesium along with trace minerals such as selenium, molybdenum, manganese and copper are essential for the maintenance of many organ systems as well as being required for enzymatic and metabolic processes at the cellular level.

Whole food vitamins, such as Vital Nutrients are made from actual fruits such as berries, citrus, melons and vegetables such as okra, tomato, broccoli, and peppers. Vital nutrients packs a whole day's supply of vitamins and nutrients in a capsule which has been made using low heat processing to avoid high-heat methods employed by other manufacturers. Low heat methods have been shown to preserve nutritional value, unlike traditional synthetic processing.

Vital Nutrients also employs a CyberEnzyme delivery system, developed by Cyberwize, the manufacturer of Vital Nutrients. CyberEnzyme deliver ensures maximum digestion and absorption of the 9 amino acid chelated minerals along with the vitamins to promote healthy nutrition. Cyberwize is a highly respected nutritional company, with many years experience in promoting health through nutritional supplements. The scientists of Cyberwize have spent years in countless studies to develop the highest quality of nutritional supplements such as Vital Nutrients and other products such as Tunguska Blast adaptogen products.

Whole Food Supplements - Better Than Dietary Supplements

By Jesse L Moore

One of the under stated risks about using any dietary supplement is that, by taking it, the temptation is no longer be concerned about your overall diet because you have "fixed" it by taking a supplement.

In fact, frequently our dietary choices actually become worse precisely because we are taking a supplement!

This belief is erroneous because the producers of supplement do not intend them to be food substitutes simply because they do not contain all the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients found in whole foods.

Further, there is some emerging science that suggests our bodies do not absorb nutrients from supplements nearly as well as it does when those same nutrients come from whole food.

Briefly, there are three general benefits the body gets when you feed it whole foods:

* Nutrients that Protect the System: Whole foods such as vegetables and fruits provide phytochemicals which are naturally occurring compounds like beta-carotene that are found naturally in many plants and evidence suggests help protect from some cancers and high blood pressure.
* More Sources of Nutrition:Whole foods are much more complex than are supplements and add a great deal more nutritional vitamins and minerals to the body
* Fiber:Fiber is critical to any diet to help prevent heart disease and type 2 diabetes

All of this suggests strongly that eating a balanced, healthy diet with a variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains you, most likely, do not need to add any dietary supplements.

On the other hand if, for whatever reason, it is not possible for you to eat enough whole foods in your daily meals than a supplement may very well be right for you.

If you are going to add a supplement to your diet, it makes sense to add one that is a raw, whole food itself and so will be readily absorbed by the body. And it would be even better if that supplement can deliver a wide range of nutrients.

The very best whole food dietary supplement available is Mila Chia Seed from LifeMax. Mila has been classified as a raw, whole food by the FDA and delivers a great many vitamins and nutrients including Omega-3 fatty acids, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Dietary Fiber, and others. Mila chia is the best of the cholesterol lowering foods.

Whole Food Supplements - What to Look For in Good Whole Food Vitamins, Multivitamins

By Sharon Wright

Multivitamin supplements are an excellent way to give your system a healthy boost. They provide the vitamins and minerals that our bodies sometimes lack, or need in greater supply. Therefore it is very important that you choose all natural, organic and whole food vitamin supplements wherever possible. These healthy choices are suitable for everyone, and there will be one specifically suited to your age, gender and health status.

Natural multivitamins and minerals are made of all-natural, organic and/or whole food-based ingredients. When selecting an effective supplement, you should check to see that third parties have tested them for optimal purity and potency. As well, they need to be free of dyes, chemicals, preservatives and any artificial colors or flavors. This way you will get the best nutritional support your body needs.

Select whole food vitamins that do not have any chemicals, sugar, or other artificial substances added to them. They are made from nutritious whole plants and fruits, such as blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries, apricots, papaya, oranges, grapes, pineapples, plums, bilberry, seaweed, kale, spinach, wheat grass, brussels sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, beets, carrots, parsley, cabbage, cauliflower, organic mushrooms and garlic. They are a complete source of essential nutrients, so they will do their job much better than artificial choices, and you can rest easy knowing you're not putting any additional harmful substances into your body.

When looking for supplements, including whole food vitamins, these are the following categories that are generally found:

* Multiple vitamins
* Calcium and magnesium
* Potassium supplements
* Selenium supplements
* Vitamin B
* Vitamin C and Ester C
* Vitamin D supplements
* Zinc supplements

Whole food multivitamins and supplements will make up for any deficiencies of essential vitamins and minerals you have experienced through your diet. People are often working longer hours, and taking many shortcuts in establishing their healthy diets. More and more, we are depending on processed foods that may also be genetically modified. These foods are often high in preservatives and low in nutritional value, so over time we can build up serious deficiencies of the nutrients our bodies need. In addition to our physical health, our mental health often suffers in times of stress and over work. It is not uncommon to experience symptoms of depression, as our fitness level decreases and our weight increases. A whole food vitamin can start replacing the depleted levels of nutrients we have in our system.

People at any age, from children to seniors, can benefit through taking whole food vitamins and mineral supplements. You can give your body the extra reserves it needs to carry you through your busy life. There are many choices available to suit your age group, gender, and health needs. You should make these supplements a part of your regular routine, rather than only once in a while, so that your system always has a healthy boost to meet the demands you place on it. Follow the recommended dosage and be ready to embrace a healthy, more energetic new you.

Natural Food Supplements

By Val McQueen

When you feel stressed or under the weather, do you immediately look for medicines to counteract these conditions? Medicines are good for treating short term illnesses, but chronic diseases is another thing. Too much medicine is not good for the body.

Medicines work by altering the natural chemistry of the body. It affects specific areas and makes the body more resistant the discomfort.

If done repeatedly, the body itself will lose its natural balance and become dependent on the chemicals of the medicine. Because medicine is not natural, it can cause you to have more aches and pains as the years go by.

So if taking medicines in the long term is not good, then how come pharmaceutical companies and doctors never tell you this? Common sense, they only way that companies can make money is to sell medicines.

All over the world, millions of people rely on medicines to cure diseases and illnesses. This allows them to gain more funds for advertising and research. Still, because drugs are not natural, they might make you feel better today but will have adverse effects in the future.

If you think about it, our bodies were designed to heal themselves. With the unhealthy lifestyles a lot of people lead, this healing process has dwindled, causing people to rely on drugs to heal them.

A way to strengthen our resistance as well as our capacity to heal is to eat healthy. Fruits and raw vegetables, organically grown, can yield your body the important nutrients it needs to heal itself. Exercising each day can also boost the immune system.

Food supplements are also a great way to keep the body healthy. These contain natural vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Because they are natural, you won't overdose or get any side effects from them.

And Knowing is half the Battle.

Food Supplements, Vitamins and Minerals in Context of Quality of Life

By Marian Fazik

It is well-known fact today, that the average life span is on increase almost in all developed countries in the world. For example the life expectancy of our children is now up to 79 years for women and 72 years for men. That means we need to prepare us for active longer lives. The problem is, how to keep fit ourselves in order to enjoy such long life. So from this viewpoint the concept of Quality of Life is getting much more importance.

The term Quality of life is used to evaluate the general well-being of individuals and societies. Scientists, experts on this area, understand the term of Quality of Life on two different levels, even though there is no final consensus over the definition of it. The first level covers a community or a country and includes standard of living - wealth, employment, built environment, physical and mental health and education of citizens, life expectancy, recreation and leisure time and social belonging. The second level includes health-related Quality of Life measures of individuals - perception of Quality of Life of individual's subjective feelings of his own health status: functional ability, psychological well-being, social network, social support and life satisfaction. The importance of those factors increases as we are getting older.

Actually, there is no fun living like an old person. Wrinkled face and skin, low energy, constant fatigue, low libido, sexual dysfunction, age-based diseases, debilitating and mental illnesses, weaker bones, excessive weight and body fat, limited or any motion without other's help, these are several effects of aging. In the detailed aspect the individual's understanding of Quality of Life could be reduced to his ability to function in the ordinary tasks of daily living.

So, if we consider about our life expectancy a lot of years far behind the time we finish our working life, there is necessary to take into account this fact and start to look ahead to healthy longevity in order to keep all aspects of our Quality of Life on the level we wish it should be. The possibility how to reach this target is already here - it is reasonable using of food supplements, vitamins and minerals. These are really strong weapons in our hands in the struggling with ageing processes.

On these days is modern to look about 10 - 15 years younger than is one's actually age. Of course, such looks would be not possible if the body is sick or in bad physical condition. There must be a harmony. Hence to keep the body in healthy condition is basic and this is exactly the way how can food supplements, vitamins and minerals help us to reach this target.

To keep our mind and body young and look much younger than is the real age is important for many reasons. A lot of people get divorced in late age about 50 and even more, it is for certain that to find a new partner is much easier if you look and feel yourself about 10 - 15 years younger than you are and you will have much more to choice from. Another reason could be that due to very dynamic development on the jobs market and with bad influence of economic crisis a lot of older people lose their job and they need to look after new one. But, which employer will hire such applicant, which looks as he is going to die on the working place? Probably no one. On this way is young and healthy looks considerable advantage. Particularly this viewpoint will have even more importance in the next future, because based on expected longevity and higher life expectancy several governments consider to postpone the age limit for the retirement, probably up to 68 for men and maybe for women also. Under such condition to keep ourselves in perfect mental and healthy condition up to such high age to be able to perform all working duties on the comparable level with much younger colleagues must be the rule. On the other hand, what is even more important, it is impact of young and healthy looks and feelings on your private life. This is about to enjoy holidays at the seaside with swimming in the sea, hiking, cycling, dancing, skiing in the winter for fans of it even in the age after seventy. So, I would say, this all is not reachable without reasonable using of food supplements, vitamins and minerals. Abundant information resources are available to guide us through healthy and positive ageing, recently most of them on the internet. This is up to us to get the facts about nutrition, exercise, attitude and social network which support healthy ageing. Taking personal responsibility for our own journey into greater maturity creates new opportunities to take control over our lives. And this is the field, where I would like to contribute with my ideas.
