Mental Effects of Food Supplements

Assessments of the cognitive benefits of food supplement use have been limited by a lack of information on the characteristics of food supplement users and the paradox that those who seem healthier also seem more likely to use supplements. According to a research group somewhere in Scotland surveys of the mental ability of young school children are the only cognitive studies with near-complete ascertainment of an entire year-of-birth cohort. These surveys of children born in 1921 and 1936 provide valid childhood mental ability data for tens of thousands of persons now in old age. Their study uses this data to examine the effects of food supplement use on cognition at the age of 64 years with mental ability test scores from the same subjects at the age of 11 years.

Childhood intelligence quotient or IQ did not differ significantly by category of food supplement use such as, none, fish oil, vitamins and other according to their research. At the age of 64, cognitive function was higher in food supplement users than in nonusers before adjustment for childhood IQ or intelligence quotient. After adjustment, digit symbol or mental speed test scores were higher in food supplement users. Fish oil supplement users consumed more vitamin C and vegetable and cereal fiber than non-supplement users. The fish oil users and nonusers did not differ significantly in exposure to vascular disease risk factors and in cognitive function but erythrocyte membrane content was higher in fish oil supplement users than in nonusers. Total erythrocyte n-3 fatty acids and the ratio of docosahexaenoic acid to arachidonic acid were associated with better cognitive function in late life before and after adjustment for childhood IQ.

Busy schedules are also a contributing factor in our declining health. Supplements are available in many different forms nowadays. Depending on the type of supplements, your age and the necessary dosage you may find them in tablet, drink or powder form. There are many types of multivitamin tablets that are on the market which are designed to cover the necessary requirements of a broad spectrum of different nutrients; these may vary for men, women, children or elderly people. There are also more specific types of tablet which tend to be just one or two different food supplements which have been created in order to supply a simple boost to the system in times of need.

Where to find Supplements

There are many places where you can now find natural food supplements for your health. You can find them in all health food shops; many supermarkets even carry them nowadays and, of course, online. There is an abundance of choice when it comes to shopping for supplements so doing some market research is always a good idea so that you know you are getting the best quality for the best price.

With pollution, GM crops, stress at work and many other influences, we really do need food_supplements to take care of us nutritionally. As the words suggests, supplements are there to supplement our diets when needed.

Do You Need Whole Food Supplements?

What are whole food supplements and are they really necessary?

Well in a nation of overfed, undernourished people they just might be. Most of the prepackaged, already prepared foods we choose to eat are of poor quality and often times void of their original nutrients. I think it's gotten so bad that most people don't even realize what real food tastes like anymore.

How sad is this when God has made sure that we have lots of healthy options.

"Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed int it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground -everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food.' And so it was" ~ Genesis 1:29-30

"Every moving thing that lives and moves will be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything." ~ Genesis 9:3.

And we choose to side step it all and feed our bodies with the substandard fare of fast food restaurants and grocery store shelves.

People, we need to wake up and realize what we are doing. We are setting ourselves up for all sorts of maladies.

* Diabetes
* Heart Disease
* Obesity
* To name a few...

And it doesn't have to be this way. We have control over what we feed our bodies. We can and should arm ourselves with information so we can start making healthier choices and start eating the real foods God intended for us to eat.

We have to stop going to so many fast food restaurants. We have to stop buying so much processed foods. And quite frankly we have to get back to basics. We have to step back into the kitchen and learn how to prepare our foods from scratch. We have lost touch with the whole food process and it is seriously harming us.

Everyone talks about health care costs these days. Well if you want to do something about health care start by fixing your diet and the diet of your loved ones. Trust me, that will go a long way!

Now, what whole food supplements? Can they be a replacement for real food? And can they make up the damage done by the diets most of us consume?

Well yes and no, depending on who you ask.

Whole foods supplements are made by concentrating the combined nutrients of whole foods. For example if you take vitamin C you get vitamin C, but if you eat an orange you will get vitamin C, beta carotene, a bit of calcium, and vitamin A! Now if you take lots of oranges and dry them out and process them into a powder you have a whole food supplement. It's better than just vitamin C, but it's not as good as the real orange which also has fiber. Fiber helps to prevent type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and constipation.

And don't forget about the phytochemicals. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with them. And they help to prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Plus some are full of antioxidants, which helps to prevent and repair cell damage. And real, whole foods come out to be less expensive that whole food supplements.

So as I repeat myself, it is best to eat real, whole foods. But if for some reason you can't, then whole food supplements can be a good second choice.

Food and Food Supplements: Which Is Better?

Scheduling meals five to six times a day can test your commitment to your nutritional plan. Sometimes, it would feel like all you're thinking about are your meals. This is totally expected because you'll constantly shop, cook and pack your food so that it's ready when you need it. ATP is usually found in red meats and its effects have been widely studied. For people who require strength and power, ATP in supplement form is available as tasteless, odorless powder. Four to six teaspoons per day is needed as initial dosing for the first five days. Thereafter, two to three teaspoons per day is the recommended dose for maintenance.

Essential fatty acids are abundant in flaxseed oil. They are not bad fats but fats that can actually help you lose fat, gain muscle, increase energy and stay healthy. Essential fatty acids, namely omega 3's and omega 6's can help keep you in an anabolic state because they are energy sources. They prevent muscles from being broken down when there is a need for energy. Nuts, seeds, cold water fishes and unsaturated, unprocessed oils are good sources of essential fatty acids. Supplemental flaxseed oils contain all essential fatty acids you need in one or two tablespoons.

The best foods are natural, unrefined and unprocessed. Most of the time, however, we don't get enough of these nutrients because of our hectic and fast paced life. Food supplements are convenient sources of foods we may not get adequate amounts of. In terms of convenience, food supplements top the list. In terms of quality, nothing beats natural, unprocessed food.
